La Convención de Diversidad Biológica (CDB) propone la construcción de nuevos vínculos entre las naciones, comunidades, empresas y diferentes grupos humanos con los recursos naturales. Además, recalca la necesidad de construir nuevas relaciones que estén basadas en las responsabilidades compartidas, la justicia y la equidad. Uno de los tres objetivos de la CDB se basa en estos principios y declara ?la distribución justa y equitativa de los beneficios que se derivan de la utilización de los recursos genéticos?.
